During your visit, one of our highly skilled dental hygienists can take a series of digital x-rays. Your hygienist can then gently remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and gum line, using a small mirror and scaler. It is perfectly normal to hear a scraping sound during this process. However, if the sound bothers you, we recommend speaking to our hygienists about our sedation options. To ensure an ultimate clean, we can floss between your teeth, before applying a rotating tooth brush and gritty toothpaste to the tooth surface. In cases where dental stains remain, we may recommend a teeth whitening treatment to restore sparkle.
Assessing Your Smile
After your cleaning, Dr. Hacker can review your x-rays to assess the health of your smile. If he detects a cavity, he may recommend a tooth-colored filling to strengthen your smile. For patients with mild to moderate case of gum disease, we may administer a deeper cleaning known as scaling and root planing. If you have a more severe case of gum disease, we may recommend LANAP® laser surgery or soft tissue grafting to repair your gum line. We can also incorporate the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique into treatment depending upon your needs.
Before the examination is complete, Dr. Hacker can perform an oral cancer screening and assess your head, neck, and face for any lumps or abnormalities. If we do detect signs of oral cancer, we may recommend a biopsy to plan proper treatment.
